What Is the USDA REAP Grant?
The Rural Energy for America Program (USDA REAP) was created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It’s designed to support rural businesses and agricultural producers by providing one-time grants and loan guarantees for renewable energy systems and energy efficiency improvements. These grants are for 50% of the total cost of the systems and do not exceed $1 million. This program aims to help these entities reduce energy costs and improve energy independence.
The program typically offers funding for:
- Renewable energy systems: Such as solar panels, battery storage systems, wind turbines, and geothermal systems.
- Energy efficiency improvements: Including upgrades to heating and cooling systems, lighting, and insulation.
Grants and loan guarantees can cover a significant portion of project costs, making it easier for rural businesses and agricultural producers to invest in energy-saving technologies. The application process usually involves submitting a proposal detailing the project’s benefits and costs.

The Eligibility Criteria for the USDA REAP Grant
The USDA REAP grant was created for rural small businesses – for-profit entities with fewer than 500 employees operating in rural areas such as small manufacturing companies, restaurants, and retail shops – and agricultural producers – individuals or entities (i.e., farms, ranches, etc.) engaged in the production of crops, livestock, poultry, or other agricultural products.
Additional eligibility criteria you need to be aware of include:
- Project location: Applicant must be in a rural area.
- Project type: Eligible projects include renewable energy systems, energy efficiency improvements, and energy storage.
- Financial requirements: Applicants must demonstrate the project’s financial feasibility and may need to provide matching funds or cost-sharing from other sources.
- Compliance: Projects must comply with local, state, and federal regulations.

Types of Solar Projects Covered by the USDA REAP Grant
Solar energy projects are a key focus of USDA REAP. The types of solar projects covered under this grant promote sustainability, reduce energy costs, and increase energy independence in rural communities.
Here are the main types of solar projects eligible for funding under the USDA REAP grant:
- Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems: These systems convert sunlight directly into electricity using solar panels. They can be for commercial or agricultural use.
- Solar thermal systems: These systems use sunlight to heat fluids, which can then be used for hot water or space heating. They include solar water heaters and solar space heaters.
- Solar irrigation systems: These systems use solar power to drive irrigation pumps, which can be particularly beneficial for agricultural operations in rural areas.
- Solar electric fencing: This involves using solar-powered systems to energize fencing, which can be useful for managing livestock or protecting crops.
Want to use the grant for battery storage? When applying for a USDA REAP grant, it’s important to integrate your solar battery system into a qualifying solar energy project and meet all the necessary requirements outlined by the USDA. This often involves demonstrating how battery storage will improve the efficiency and reliability of the renewable energy system.
The Application Process
The application process typically begins with completing an application package, which includes a detailed project proposal, financial documents, and supporting materials. Applicants must demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of their proposed renewable energy system or energy efficiency improvement. The USDA requires detailed project plans, cost estimates, and a clear explanation of how the project will reduce energy consumption or increase the use of renewable energy.
Once the application is submitted, it undergoes a review process to assess its alignment with program goals and eligibility criteria. Applicants may be asked to provide additional information or make revisions. It’s important to adhere to all deadlines and requirements outlined in the application instructions.
Applying for a USDA REAP grant involves several steps that require careful preparation and adherence to USDA guidelines. For assistance with your application, we encourage you to contact Live Oak Energy Systems today.
